The 3rd WWWave
feminism for the new millenium

"We are a group of women who feel passionately about women's issues, and we decided to put up a site that would reflect the unique view of women's issues and feminism in the generation of women who came of age in the 80's. You'll find historical information that you might not have known, discussion of politics, sexuality, daily life, sports and hobbies . . . and lots more! Feminism is not dead; in fact, it's on the rise again, but in a new form.(...) We offer facts that you probably didn't learn in school; opinions about issues we face at home, at work, and in our relationships; rants about our frustrations-- which may help you identify some of your own frustrations; and solutions for a more woman-friendly world." Take a look at their bookshelf!

Guerrilla Girls
"In 1985, a group of women artists founded the Guerrilla Girls. They assumed the names of dead women artists and wore gorilla masks in public, concealing their identities and focusing on the issues rather than their personalities. Between 1985 and 2000, close to 100 women, working collectively and anonymously, produced posters, billboards, public actions, books and other projects to make feminism funny and fashionable. At the turn of the millennium, three separate and independent incorporated groups formed to bring fake fur and feminism to new frontiers."

cyberfeminism - women + technology

Digitales "Digitales are full days of meetings/participation to share knowledge, skills, experiences, dreams and questioning. They arise from a simple and complex approach : we live here and now. We use new technologies to work, to create, to communicate, for our research, to play, to connect, to learn;
They are a common effort to experiment, to exchange knowledge, thoughts and practices in the world of work and vocational training, of art and academic research, without falling into techno-phobia or becoming techno-fans. We have always approached digital techniques with a critical and creative eye and adopted the women’s movement practices so that our work encourages action directly. Neither conference, nor just a forum, Digitales are continuous days of “work” open to the public and taking place in places of vocational training or of work in Belgium, with people who, are being trained and work there, and with resource people, some local, some not, coming with their tools . Archives (images, sound, texts) are kept online and largely distributed since 2001."

Axis, bureau voor de kunsten v/m Oudezijds Watertorenplein
(Amsterdam, The Netherlands)
"Axis, Foundation for Gender and the Arts, was founded in 1997. Axis initiates and organizes projects such as exhibitions, film and video programmes, symposia and lectures in the area of the visual arts (including new media), performing arts, literature, music and mass media. The introduction of the term "gender," which relates the definition of the sexes to their changing context, and of the concepts "transgender" and "queer," broader interpretations of "gay" and "lesbian," marks the new range of visions on sexual identity. In its programming, Axis focuses on the interchange between the development of these theories and art practice, and seeks to show the influence of unconventional views about sexual identity in art. Special focuses of attention are visions of the future (a theme that was raised by the Avatar event, in response to developments in digital culture), commentary on the mass media (discussed in the "F/M on TV" debates on the basis of the rise of the woman detective), and intercultural interactions (on gender and the visual arts in a worldwide perspective, brought together in the web project "Changing Images")."

Third World Majority

"Third World Majority (TWM) is a new media training and production resource center run by a collective of young women of color and our allies dedicated to developing new media practices that affect global justice and social change through grassroots political organizing. Through our collaborations with other organizations, we support organizing for social change and global justice in real, representational and virtual worlds where communities of color are centered in the production, distribution and educational processes. Our principal organizing focus is the community digital storytelling workshop. This three-day workshop is a unique training approach that integrates aspects of popular education, creative writing, oral history, facilitative filmmaking, and digital media manipulation to assist people in telling their stories as three-to-five minute digital videos based on the found materials in their lives (like photographs, personal drawings and letters, newspaper clippings, etc.). VNS Matrix
(Australia)
VNS Matrix emerged from the Cyberswamp during a steamy Southern Australian Summer, circa 1991. From 1991 - 1997 they presented several installations and public art works in Australia and overseas, working with new media, photography, sound and video. Along with Sadie Plant, they coined the term 'cyberfeminism' in the early 1990's. The impetus of the group was to investigate and decipher the narratives of domination and control which surround high technological culture, and explore the construction of social space, identity and sexuality in cyberspace. The project which they pursued was one of debunking the masculinist myths which might alienate women from technological devices and their cultural products. They believe that women who hijack the tools of domination and control introduce a rupture into a highly systematised culture by infecting the machines with radical thought, diverting them from their inherent purpose of linear topdown mastery.” http://lx.sysx.org/vnsmatrix.html

Webgrrls International – the women’s tech knowledge connection "Webgrrls International provides a forum for women in or interested in new media and technology to network, exchange job and business leads, form strategic alliances, mentor and teach, intern and learn the skills to help women succeed in an increasingly technical workplace and world."
